Young Veterans RSL visit Cooktown and the Nursing Home gets a sweet gift for Christmas
The Young Veterans RSL called into Cooktown on their epic trip north to Cape York. The crew consisted of co-founder Chris May - the talker of the group, Shane Dixon - mechanic, Katie Batham - medic and Reyne Boxhall. Cooktown RSL Sub Branch met with them on Thursday night for dinner and drinks at the newly renovated Cooktown RSL Memorial Club. Friday held a big day for everyone with visits to both our local schools (2 upper and 1 lower school talks). Chris had all the kids enthralled with video footage from Afghanistan and explanations of how IEDs work. Lunch was at the Sunbird Cottage Nursing Home where residents got to chat with the Young Veterans and admire their vehicles. Endeavour Lions Cooktown had donated a large BBQ recently with RSL Sub Branch members helping every month to help with the residents and the cooking. This month a big surprise was in store for nursing staff and residents as both the Cooktown RSL Sub Branch and the Cooktown RSL Memorial Club donated $500 each (totalling $1000) for their Christmas Day lunch and events. Chris May told up that he was humbled by the generosity of small towns and that Cooktown most definitely deserved the thankyou speech from matriach Maureen Mason.
